CKC Earthdog Tests are a basic instinct test for those breeds that were originally developed to go to ground and bay, bolt or draw aggressive quarry such as Fox, Badger, Otter, or Mink. They are open to all Dachshunds and Group IV Terrier Breeds small enough to negotiate a 9-inch x 9-inch tunnel and provide a safe environment for these game and independent little dogs to express their natural instincts. To quote JoAnn Frier-Murza, renowned Earthdog Judge and breeder of Lothlorien Working Terriers “Dogs have so little control over their lives in this modern world, Earthdog is a good place for them to express their individuality.”
For the owners, the tests provide an opportunity to explore a new relationship with their dogs. One in which the dog is the team leader but which requires trust between dog and handler. For those concerned that participating in Earthdog tests will encourage aggressive tendencies, it must be remembered that these dogs were bred to hunt. Allowing them to express their natural drive in a controlled and safe (for them and the quarry) manner will focus those tendencies and reduce the likelihood of acting out by misbehaving
Because Earthdog tests are a true instinct test, previous exposure or training is not necessarily required to enter at the lowest level (Introduction to Quarry). While some dogs take more time than others to “catch on”, if the willingness to go to ground and the desire to get up to their quarry is lurking in there somewhere, it will surface. It is one of the Intro judge’s responsibilities to do everything they can within the test guidelines to bring out those instincts, thus making Earthdog Tests a friendly, supportive, educational and rewarding event for dog and owner. The dual reward when an owner sees “the light bulb go on” and the little terrier or dachshund discovers his heritage is immense.
